Opinions Wanted Friday: Family Travel/Healthy Eating

Last week you guys showed up with great advice on my new adventures in biking!! Key points:

1. Your back will get stronger, be sure to engage your core.
2. Adjust your seat
3. You don't need a road bike
4. Find a group or a trail or both

Ok so this week...here is the scenario and question: I adore my new family (in-laws) but they are meat, potatoes and butter. When I go to visit I try generally make good choices...but there aren't always available choices and I know a morning Green Monster would send them over the edge. Picture a la the Green Monster creator Oh She Glows

As I pack up for the 4th of July visit to Iowa, I am planning to take along some fruit and ask to go to the store...any other tips out there? How do you deal with family travels when they may not see eye to eye on your healthy eating? May not understand your desire not to eat so much meat...or your very strange green smoothie?

ohh I know exactly how you feel, except it's MY family, not the inlaws !! Just ask to go to the store like you already mentione, and get food you want to eat. I'm sure they will love you all the same (although they may roll their eyes at the green monster!) Have a wonderful weekend!

My experience is that if you don't make a big deal about it and are not judgmental it works well. Also, I would small portions of everything because I am sure they are proud and want you to sample what they have cooked. (I know I do when I cook for guests.) But then eat mostly the healthy stuff like salad, veggies, fruit. As for a green smoothie, hmmmmm, I am not sure how to introduce that.

Brent's parents don't understand the meaning of vegetarian. I always head to the grocery store when we head up for a visit.

My family is the same way (my in-laws are much more understanding). I agree with NY Wolve - just don't make a big deal about it, sample the home-cooked stuff, and head to the store. I'd go ahead & do the green smoothies, too and be prepared for some (hopefully) good-natured ribbing.

Like others have said my family is very supportive (my mom actually eats the same way I do because of her heart disease). It's my husband's parents that are NOT supportive, my father in law goes so far to mock healthy eating. He actually mocked my 7 yr old nephew for eating a salad one day, seriously who does that! My sister in law was furious.

The ironic thing is that he was recently diagnosed with high bp, high cholesterol, and on set of type 2 diabetes. Maybe he should take some tips and realize not everything needs to be slathered in bacon grease, butter, and Crisco to taste good. He is not even willing to TASTE stuff. It's really toxic (for the lack of a better description).

Oh I deal with this every time I go to the in laws. I try to do the small portions of most of the spread b/c the MIL would take offense if I turned everything down. Go to the store and make a healthy side dish or pick up some healthy items to snack on. That's what I do!

I am a rebel ;) I just do what I want and don't really care how they eat! LOL HAPPY FRIDAY!

I need to be stronger in this. My family and my in-laws are big on pushing food on you as a way of showing love, so it's so hard for me to turn it down. I usually just relax and eat what I want within reason, and try to get some runs in while I'm there. Good luck and have fun! I like what NY Wolve said about trying small portions of things but loading up on healthier stuff.

I be sure to pack plenty of easy for travel granola bars. They can be eaten when traveling - meaning less need for fast food and pit stops. They are also great for a back up healthy option, particularly for starting my day off right.

I try my best to just be polite and eat mostly what they eat. No meat, but I'll eat all the other goodies they offer me. Just go with the flow, if you can.

we just got back from a 15 day road trip

we brought our own food bag, peanut butter, crackers, dry goods and we had our own cooler and kept stuff in there and then we just asked where the grocery store was and just did our own thing every now and then. we found cut up fruit and things like that-that we just left in our cooler and snacked on.

several of the houses we stayed in ate very different from us-WHITE bread! i haven't seen white bread in years and years!

i think you can offer to cook one night if that works out?

I bring my own food.. I try not to offend, but I don't eat red meat or pork, so they understand.. Most of the time. Happy 4th!

Honestly, if it's family I think they should respect decisions you make and not make fun and/or it difficult for you. My family doesn't get my running marathons, seriously who goes out and runs 26.2 miles just for kicks? Anyway, but they support it and ask about runs and how they are going etc...they would be OK about if I was doing those types of things too. Heck, my mom might be all about the green smoothies. She's much less fussy than me! I still have to get adventurous and try one.

We've stopped at the store when visiting my in laws to get something I like to eat. Andy also calls his mom and prepares her for my eating habits!
