My gold star days for 9 servings of fruits and veggies took a dive, but have started to regain traction. For starters, I'm still not entirely sure what a serving size is on many things...but I've made my own personal call about what is 9 servings a day and I am generally aiming high.
I think that I am reaching for foods like bread, cereal and granola bars because they are comforting and spike seratonin with all those lovely carbs. I don't feel bad about my eating at all because focusing on this challenge has helped me to ensure that even on those days I am really focusing on having veggies.
Fruit is always so easy...it's this quick grab and go snack. But for me personally I have to plan life out to make veggies happen. I enjoy some raw veggies, but prefer them cooked....and I am sad to say I stopped drinking Green Monsters most days because they just weren't cutting it for me. I am going to try to restart this especially since this is a really high mileage week and I know that my body will suck up those nutrients.

My soul component started to fall off as well and you know what I felt that. I am making a sincere effort to say hello and meet people here, but lacking in those familiar connections. I stink at making phone calls and so I'm trying very diligently to email and Facebook or whatever I can to maintain the amazing friends that I have. Thank you to everyone for all the tips and true support as I know this will get easier. I want to make sure everyone knows we are SO HAPPY to be here and I love that we made this choice. I am just a person who thrives on intimate connections.

20 Bloggie Friend Thoughts:
It looks like you are doing great on this challenge. I am impressed!
Have you noticed a change in your food expenditures with this challenge?
Looks like your doing great! I am better with veggies then fruit? I can go days w/o fruit. I am moving away from family next year for sure and I'm scared because I'll be going alone no boy with me, but it seems like it's time for an adventure! I know it will be hard, but it's good to get outside of your comfort zone right?
I understand the intimate connections part. When I moved from Arizona to South Carolina I knew that I had to get out there to meet people so I could enjoy everything South Carolina had to offer. Now I have some amazing friends! It looks like you are doing a great job on your challenge!
I'm with you on the fruits/veggies. Grabbing some fresh fruit is a perfect on-the-go snack with SWEETNESS too. I am less inclined to munch on raw veggies so they always require extra prep time. You're still doing great!
When I was 28 my husband (then boyfriend) and I moved from the east coast to Denver. We didn't know a single person here and I had a really hard time being without family and friends. My husband wasn't fazed at all; was just happy to be here. I really missed those intimate connections and since they don't happen overnight I was pretty lonely for a while. But it got better and now I am surrounded by so many dear friends and still have those in VA and MD. Be patient, and it will come...
You are a very stong woman, and those connections will happen. You guys made an awesome decision for the both of you and it will soon pay off. I do understand though not having close friends around and family - I am a chicken myself and that is one reason why we haven't made the leap.
Good job on the veggies and fruits. I am the opposite of you, I love my veggies raw! Which is good for me 'cuz I can get lazy with cooking them! :)
great job on the fruits. i find it hard to eat raw veggies too. but i always try to find a way to incorporate it into our meals.
im sure you'll make connections soon. when we moved here to Pullman, I knew NO ONE, and i seriously got really down on myself, but when I finally got a job and found something other than food, i was totally fine. it just takes time.
What an excellent challenge! I think it is so easy to underestimate how many fruits and veggies we get in a day, so tracking them is a great idea.
I stopped w/ the GMs too - kind of a summer thing for me, but I should start over again too!
i hate talking on the phone. online is such an easy way to connect with people.
you got right back into your goldstar mode, love the consecutive days :)
happy thursday!
I read about this lady in Born to Run that eats a big salad every morning for breakfast and gets all her servings of fruits and veggies in that one meal so she doesn't have to worry about it and after that meal whatever fruit and veggie she eats is just bonus.
I always make different flavored hummus to dip my raw veggies in- it's super yummy and hides the main flavor of broccoli which i find less than appealing.
Keep up the good work!
Reading this brings back so many memories and not so good feelings of when I moved to MI. I'm such a social person and have so many amazing, close, friendships. It was really hard leaving that. But I made such a point to not let things changed. We still emailed every day, texted, visited, etc. It takes more effort, but you'll see it makes the friendships even stronger.
And for servings, a serving of veggies is actually really small, in my opinion. I know my salad every day counts for at least 3 right there.
wow you've been doing greatttt! so proud ofyou! i feel you on the green monsters... ever since its gotten colder i haven't really been in the mood but they pack such a great nutritional punch! love youre so inspiring with veggie intake :)
i agree with all the others, you're doing awesome. i wish i could live off fruit :)
your question of if veggies lose nutrients being cooked? yes they do. fresh is clearly always best. Technically if one dehyd's something at under 115ish then all nutrients are preserved. Its when you blast something at 400F you kill alot, but eating cooked, frozen ,canned veggies or anythig other than fresh is still better than eating cheetos, ya know :)
I've only made 2 big moves in my life: California to Michigan and Michigan to Arizona. I agree that it takes time to meet the "gems" out in the community, but with you taking the initiative and your positivity, I'm sure it will seem more like home in no time. Although a part of society is shifting from talking to texting, I think personal relationships will always persist as long as people are willing to make an effort. :)
I seriously cannot believe how many fruits and veggies you consume on a daily basis. You are my hero :)
Wow, it looks like you're doing well with your veggie goals...it still keeps me on my toes, thanks!
It's so hard to find true, intimate friends quickly. Sometimes it just takes a bit but hang in there!
You are impressive with the veggie dedication. I can't. I've tried,b ut I always forget about them or think I'll be fine with just pasta or rice.
