Opinions Wanted Friday: Pet Peeves

I am always fascinated by what weird and strange little thing will set off otherwise sane and calm people.

Personally….I can’t stand when anyone other than my father whistles.  Isn’t that completely bizarre??? I mean there has to be a reason why I want to slap tape over their mouths when I hear it…but it’s like a joyful little ditty when he does it.

For David, it is clearly any other driver on the road. Yes, just the pure fact that they exist annoys this otherwise completely laid back man…it’s highly amusing to watch for me personally.

So this week…let’s hear it folks? What is your nails on the chalkboard pet peeve?

Other drivers definitely annoy me. I am really calm and laid-back but when I get behind the wheel, I go crazy.

Lindsey @ Sound Eats said...

OK, I have MANY other pet peeves but I too am irritated with whistlers! It never bothered me until my husband and my father-in-law. Specifically my FIL. He's a musician/ and composer and so he is ALWAYS whistling. It is a very LOUD and shrill whistle. And with the way his musical mind works he'll whistle a different harmony to a jingle in a commercial but he'll keep going and going into the next commercials or the show! Ugh. Drives me nuts. Not I get so irritated when I hear whistling.

Whew, I feel better now. :D

I also get annoyed by whistling! I don't make any exceptions, though....I just can't stand it, no matter who does it. My obsessive annoyance with it probably got worse when I got into my current job, and found out one of my coworkers is a constant whistler. Just the thought of it annoys me....LOL!

Jesse said...

My "nails on the chalkboard" pet peeve is any repetitive sound - rattle, knocking, tapping, anything like that. If someone is tapping their pencil on a desk, it will make me go insane!!

My wife gets a good kick out of my annoyance with sounds, because if something starts rattling around the house or in the car, I go on a mad witch-hunt until I eradicate the problem.

Other drives it's true I am a little person suffering from road rage.

College guys on alcohol. Nuff said there I think.

People who nag

And people who whine about their bf/significant others w/o acting on the emotion. Talk to them NOT me!

Those are just a few, I'm not at all uptight ;)

Laura said...

Waiting, especially on other people drives me nuts. If I call a meeting for 10am...it means 10am and not 10:05, 10:15 etc.

Jogger said...

Oh geez. Let's see.

1) Bad parents. I'm not talking about accidental bad parents or people who occasionally screw up. I'm talking about people who let their 2 year old walk alone on the sidewalk behind them. People who let their kids stay up until midnight on a school night watching scary movies. THOSE parents are my #1 pet peeve.

2) People who smack and make disgusting noises when they eat, and any loud crunching noise that occurs while people are eating. This one bothers me much more when I'm tired and grumpy though. =)

3) When my coworkers use the last bit of water in the Keurig but don't refill it. Annoyingggg!!!

Ok. I'm going to stop there...I'm sad to admit that I could probably list about 20 here! lol.

When someone has a "dog whistle" clearly up their nose and whenever they breath this little whistle sound emits from their nose.

Drives me completely insane, like fingers in the ears make it stop kind of insane.

I'm with David, I'm the BEAST driver on the road, everyone else pales in comparison to my skillz.

Elina said...

I hate when people whistle too (anyone!!). My other pep peeve is when people slowly walk in front of you, and then just stop out of no-where (like NYC tourists!!). Oh man, that just makes my blood boil. Hehe.

Molly said...

I hate it when people say Two Thousand And Nine for the year Two Thousand Nine. If there were a period in the number you would say "and" But it's the year, there is no period in a year!!!!!

Anna Banana said...

I hate people who walk slow! It drives me absolutely nutty! When I walk with someone slow I have to conciously think about each step at least when you walk behind someone who is slow you can pass them! When my boss repeatively clicks her pen over and over I want to rip it out of her hand and throw it accross the room. Finally, on teh road I hate when people aren't turning right and they are the only car in front on you preventing you from turning and they won't drive up! Feels good to get those off my chest.

Newly and Forever, Tamantha said...

I absolutely can't stand when people slurp their soup or hot drinks! This almost immediately illicits a strong desire to pop them upside the head and say "wait til the stuff cools down so you don't slurp!"

Eliza said...

Oh wow ... Poor David ... Drivers in Miami are AWFUL!!!

I have to say the same though ... but I specifically get set off by Miami drivers. Once I leave Miami, people suddenly know how to drive :}

Go Fig!

Eating/drinking noises. CANNOT HANDLE! When my husband makes any kind of smacking noise or chews too loud I give him the evil eye. Even when my golden retriever slurps down a bunch of water and then smacks his tongue around I yell at him to stop. A little psycho? YES. But can't help it!

Oh man, your readers are funny!! (Don't worry peeps, I count myself amongst you, too!)
Mine is weird...I HATE TO HEAR SOMEONE SNEEZE! Irritates me beyond belief! And, I HATE to sneeze myself. I think it's a control thing...I have severe type A personality. In fact, my husband has learned to appologize after he sneezes! I know, bad!
Oh, and I live with the world's worst drivers...the Bay Area, CA. I am not a happy camper in the car!
Have a great weekend!! :)

Genesis said...

people who chew with their mouths open WIDE! drives me insane!

Marlene said...

People who "think out loud" (i.e. TALK TO THEMSELVES), especially at the office. One of my bosses does this and it makes me crazy. I never know if she is talking to me or the voices in here head.

I also have countless pet peeves on the road, but let's not go there. I can already feel my blood boiling.

Grouchy/rude runners/walkers/cyclists who ignore my friendly smile, wave or hello. it's okay if they're in the zone, but when they look right AT me... come on, is it so difficult to NOD?!

Crumbs on the counter. OMG.

The sound of someone clipping their nails.

Trailer Park Boys... when it is on TV (hubs likes it, unfortunately) my ears start to bleed.

yes - I have a few......

When people talk to me when I am clearly reading a book in the break room. Makes me want to scream!!!

Alisa said...

SLOW drivers!!!!! Pet peeve #1, especially now that I've moved to a state notorious for slow drivers.

People who have an "entitled" attitude.

I've been behind on my blog reading/commenting...hope Florida is treating you guys well.

shellyrm said...

Just one?...It annoys me when my boss has nothing to do but STARE at me! (and he makes 4x what I do. Go figure!)

Denise said...

I'm with you on the whistling!! I hate it. But I really hate loud yawners.

Missy said...

I agree with the whistling! My boyfriend does it and I yell at him because it makes it seem like he's waiting for something!

Also I can't stand when people scratch carpets. It sounds weird but I freak out!

Jamie said...

When men hawk a loogi (however it's spelled!) the whole getting the snot out of the throat for 5 minutes makes me start dry heaving/freaking out - yuck!

Also repetitive sounds drive me nuts! It's all I can hear when something is making the same sound over and over (tapping, smacking, beeping).

Rookie on the Run said...

Inconsiderate drivers make me mad! And we have a lot of them here.

Also, I can't stand when people say "huh?" instead of "what?" or "excused me?" It's like fingernails on a chalkboard for me.

Lastly, people puffing away on cigarettes anywhere near me really, really irritates me.

Jocelyn said...

Whistling in general is a top pet peeve. You are not alone! People love to do it on the subway...I can't escape it! I can't tell them to stop either!
I also hate is children who scream...I think everyone feels me on that one.
There is a guy at work who every morning will say "Happy Monday" (or whatever day it is. EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. Its so annoying.

N.D. said...

agree w/ david. Especially those that drive the speed limit or under.

*Naomi* said...

ohh pet peeves where do I begin... my BF has a tendency to say "so aren't they" if he is trying to say "so ARE they" I don't get it?! i notice his father does it too, so thats where he gets it!

i also can't stand when in a crowded place, people sneeze all over the place and do not sneeze into a kleenex or their sleeve, just out in the open!

can't stand when someone tries to talk to me during a workout...I mean I know they are trying to be friendly but this is MY time to workout, and I have headphones in!!! it can wait

ok thats all, but i could go on!

happy friday girlie!

aron said...

when people get in my personal space!! like at the store if someone is standing WAY too close to you in line... that drives me insane!

Jason said...

My pet peeve is when cars don't stop to let runners and bikers get by on the road. Ugh.

Pet peeves..my husband scraping his fork off his teeth with nearly every bite. 10 yrs later, I still am not used to it!

Other peeves, slow and/or indecisive drivers or meandering, strolling people in the mall. Walk with a purpose, peeps!

Melissa said...

*Slow walkers, slow runners, slow drivers GET OUT OF THE WAY!
*Driving anywhere in S. FL is my pet PEEVE,
*Stirring of Chocolate milk, the metal spoon clanging against the glass, sets my nerves OFF!
*SNEEZING and COUGHING or FARTING, I hate those people that feel compelled to do these bodily functions in a public place.

So there, thanks for letting me vent :)

People who make other people feel guilty, when most are trying to do the best they can in life.

Oh, okay too deep? How about people who eat chips or popcorn too loud. The guy walking his dog letting little 4 legs use our front lawn as a litter box ( I am watching him right now in fact). Most NBA and NFL Refs and Officials. Chuck E Cheese.

renae said...

My husband shakes his yogurt before opening it. Most normal people open it and then stir it with a spoon. Not him. No way. He has to shake it like mad and that gloopy swoshy wet sound just sets me off like no other. Ugh. I'm feeling all oogy just thinking about it!

Jules said...

Nosiy eaters/drinkers, drives me insane! :) Of course, i'm sure I could think of a few things my hubby does that annoy me but probably wouldn't if anyone else did it. Ya know, it's that whole living in close quarters with the one that you love, you're bound to get on each other's nerves occasionally :)

Jenny said...

ohhh I am the queen of pet peeves -- loud chewers, snoring, when people scrape their teeth with their fork. can't handle it. I'm also not a fan of people who wear sunglasses indoors (mainly Kanye West)

Meg Runs said...

Wow, lots of peeves! I don't even want to start a list or I won't be able to stop! Love the Chuck E Cheese one though!

Mel-2nd Chances said...

oh boy, i've been thinking about this a lot lately, cuz they all seem to be happening around me this week. Bad/slow/non-curteous drivers. Going to the fridge to get some cold brita water to find it empty cuz others haven't bothered to refill. Going to put something in the trash can, and while someone was nice enough to take out the full bag, didn't bother to put a new one in.... and shoes, hanging out in front of the closet. ugh! ahhhhhhh, i feel better now! :D

Anne said...

Gum smacking, for sure! Also bad and mean drivers. In Arizona, there are a ton of insane drivers. I'm like, just chill out!!

when people under the age of 35 hold up the whole line at the grocery store by writing a paper check, instead of just swiping their debit card like the rest of the world....

UGH! My pet peeves are related to my transit commute. I hate when men sit with their legs wide open and take up two seats by doing so. I also hate when people fall sideways when they fall asleep on the bus and bump into me. UGH!

runkerarun said...

People that ride public transit and, even though they're wearing headphones, play their music so loudly I can hear it 10+ feet away. So unnecessary!

Unproductive coughing makes me nuts. Hate!

-When myself or my kids clothes don't match.

-People who are late.

-Promises unkept.

-Things in diorder.

-Sink full of dirty dishes.

-People who ask for help before trying to figure things out on their own first.

-Being asked if I want a credit card every time I go to Target.

OK guess I have a lot of them...maybe they are more irritations than pet peeves.

lifestudent said...

I couldnt even start. According to my sister a biography of my life would be called "I Hate Everything". So basically, everything is my pet peeve.

Of of the tops on my list? Passive aggressiveness!

Carly said...

Wow...I am trying to contain my list! Right now my biggest one is:

people who cut me off while I am speaking or try to finish my sentences.

Linda said...

OK - here are a couple of my pet peeves.

People that rake the leaves into the street . . . so as not to damage the tree court area of their yard . . . it is all going to be dead in a month and covered with snow.

People that put out those red plastic bows on Wreaths and Christmas decorations . . . rip that red plastic off and add a bow made out of ribbon.

People that decorate the yard with blow up decorations. yuck

Ali said...

This is hilarious, I love everyone's pet peeves. My is lateness and people who pull out in front of me then drive really slow.

Megan said...

Do not pull my pony tail. I will loose my mind. Even a playfull little tug will set me off.

Runners/walkers/Stroller-people/bikers who don't share the trail nicely....hello! Etiquette!

Andrea (Off Her Cork) said...

Oh lord so many! I also hate when people whistle. It's creepy. Straight up creepy and when I hear someone whistling, I run the other way. No lie.

I hate when people talk on their cell phones in public.

I hate when people sneak in things like Taco Bell to the movie theater. GROSS!

I'll stop there, I have way too many! LOL
