Opinions Wanted Friday: Running in the dark

Weird confession…morning running in the dark is one of my favorite things. I am oddly energized by the silence in the world around me.  Running in the dark at night scares the serious you know what out of me and I don’t even have digestive trouble when I run.

Do you run in the dark? Do you find it easier to run in the morning or night darkness?

---------------------------
Just to keep you up to date on things here:
The neck and back hurt…I am thinking something is out of place because I have a headache that won’t go away either.  Pooo on car wrecks.

Made it to running group last night in 30 minutes instead of 45!!

I’ve got 20 miles on the plan for Saturday…eiiik the leg is hurting so I’m nervous. But I think I’ve found a new route that would be enjoyable.

Certainly don't mind running in the dark just make sure it's at night and not in the morning. BTW~look into why your neck/back hurts......

I'd much rather run by myself in the dark in the morning and watch the sun come up. It's a great way to start the day, I think. I don't mind running in the dark at night, as long as I am with someone else. I feel safer running at night with others. Kind of weird, I know.

I have to be honest, i wish i had the will-power to wake up earlier in the mornings to run then, but I have my son to get ready for school, and work at home, and it's damn cold in the mornings here now... my bed is far too cozy. As for the nights, I also don't mind when I'm with others...

I'm too chicken to run in the dark alone! I would definitely check on that neck. My neck injury from a wreck off a horse didn't heal right and I still have problems from it that if I had followed up on it I wouldn't have.

I don't enjoy dark mornings... with the combination ofn the cold, it is just not a pleasant way to wake up.

Hope you can get your neck and back checked out and that it is nothing too serious.

Good luck with the 20!

I don't mind the dark at all. I keep myself kitt-ed out with tons of reflective gear as the drivers in our neck of the woods seem to be blind to any 2 legged objects.

I've only run in the dark a couple times, and I didn't like it. I'm very clumsy and I have a hard enough time not tripping over things in the daylight!

hope your pains go away, good luck on the 20 miler!

Definitely not here in Arizona! It's bad enough running in the daytime with the amount of unwanted "attention." I'd feel safer back home in Michigan, but I'd still feel like I'd need to run with a guy, group, or dog for safety.

I prefer running alone in the a.m. The crazies are generally asleep when I'm out running, the sun comes up, I have no excuses like Happy Hour to prevent me from putting it off or not doing it at all...

i love anticipating new/fun routes!! good luck!!!! go by feel for sure. car accidents are really scary. maybe you should get a check up? or at least a massage :)

oh! and running in the dark-- i go at night all the time. try to wear something light colored or reflector-ish if it isn't dirty:) and i will run a route that has street lights.

My friend and I went for a 10 PM run a couple weeks ago because it was the only time we could fit it in, and it was pretty spectacular.

The best, though, is during an overnight race, when you get to watch the sun come up the next morning - an energy boost like you wouldn't believe.

Good luck with the long run - you're going to rock Vegas!

After this week, no more running at night during twilight or later! I will most def be running in the early morning!
Take care of yourself girly, maybe you should have your neck check out?
And rock those 20 miles! You got it in the bag! :)

Not a darkness person here ... bad night vision, and headlamps only add to the dizziness!

I hope your neck and back feel better soon!

I run in the dark at night but only because the path is well lit. I do scare myself sometime but I guess it's good I'm alert in my surroundings! I'm just can't make myself into a morning person even though I wish I could.

Hope you feel better soon. And definitely go see someone about the pain/headache. It shouldn't be lasting this long girlie!

Oh no! I feel the same way. LOVE running in the morning but at night-- NO GO!

Mornings I have so much more energy and I love being at the end of my work day with no workout to do!

Get your back fixed before the 20 lady, you don't want to be in even more pain.... :( Ya the dark scares the poop out of me as well. Stupid impending winter.

I'm an evening dark runner. I like starting out in the light and easing into the darkness. Much less scary that way and makes you go faster.

aron said...

the evening dark scares me!!! but the morning dark is lovely :) i think its the fact that there arent people around. in the evening all the crazy commuters are out!

I don't like running in the dark ever. I always trip and fall or run into something. Plus, I get spooked WAY too easily!

Denise said...

I like running in the silence of the dark but I find my body is tense for fear of tripping, etc and I end up putting more effort into the run and feel a little sore.

Believe said...

I strangely also enjoy morning darkness running :) Something about the silence is stress relieving-time to ourselves out of the hecticness of life you know? I admittedly wear a reflector or two just incase but I do love it. The sunrise is my favorite part of the morning run :) Good luck on the run tomorrow, you can do it!!!

I have never run in the dark...yes I know?? First off my hubby would worry and second I am SCARED!!! I know I need to try it.. but thankfully my mid day lunch hour running fits me just fine.

Hope your 20 milers goes well..

I have to run at the same time every morning. Sometimes it's dark, sometime light... though if it's too dark I'll just jump on the treadmill.

I'm not much of a runner and have never actually run in the dark, but I enjoy that 'silence' too. I've decided I want to start running and did a little brick workout yesterday after spin. Hopefully I'll find the time! So sorry to hear about your accident!!! gosh, so scary, I hope you find out what is going on :(
thanks for the squash comment

I do run in the dark when I have to, but since I live in California and prefer to run in the morning I rarely end up running in the dark.
Although I prefer morning runs, running before dawn creeps me out a little. There is something about the darkness before dawn that's erie. Running after sunset is not scary at all however.

I don't like to run in the dark by myself at all! I freak myself out too much! Haha. Hope your neck and back feel better soon!

20 miles! Rock it girl! I will be thinking of you :) I enjoy running in the morning when its half dark. I feel like I run SUPER fast. Hope the neck and back feel better! Happy weekend

20 miles!!! Wow!

Hmm...the dark - hate running in it - especially because it's so cold ...I would prefer to run in the dark in the morning - for some reason it does seem safer?? - except where I live there are at least alot more traffic and stores/houses lit up in the evening versus in the morning...so at least I wouldn't be so paranoid...

But I ran in the dark the other evening (I'm talking around 6p.m here - not super late!! (after dinner I'm out for the night haha! i can't think of runnig because i'm stuffed) - and I find it realllly hard to find my footing in the dark!!! like I kept falling in potholes and running off of sidewalks...not safe and not cool:o

Morning Dark - Love It!

I don't mind running in the dark. There is something oddly peaceful running when there is no sun shinning. However, I do on occasion freak myself out!

I love running in the dark mornings - I do sometimes scare myself with my own shadow! I like how there arent as many cars out there and bascially i am alone. At night time theres a lot of traffic and I really have to pay attention so i dont get hit by a car.

Paige said...

I like running in the morning darkness. Being out there before everyone else gets going makes me feel like I am doing something special!

Rio Runs said...

After getting over my initial hesitancy, I now love running mornings in the dark. The day feels new and peaceful. I get a great feeling of satisfaction of completing my run early in the day. I know this sounds weird, but sometimes I feel that direct sunlight drains some of my energy so its easier for me to run in the dark (or in cloud cover, etc.)

Running in the dark; it's quiet, cool, calm, silent, solitary but never scary to me...love it!!

lifestudent said...

Gotta comment on this - running in the AM dark is way better. Im excited about a day that is beginning, I can expect the sun to come up at some point, and dont worry (as much) about getting jumped while running. At night its just the opposite!

Jon Gilchrist said...

I heart running in the dark, as well. And without the music - it makes for a very involving experience. Hoep U get that run in....

Amanda said...

I enjoy both morning and night dark runs, but probably prefer night. I just like that dark peacefulness, but am always afraid I'm going to trip and fall.

sRod said...

I find night running more exciting and adventuresome. It's dark, things look different, it feels a little dangerous.
