Rip Tide Warning

A rip tide warning is certainly never something I saw on my morning “weather watch” in Kansas City…and you might be thinking to yourself “who cares you are running not swimming”. Ahh well for runners a rip tide warning means crazy awesome wind that at times makes you feel like you are moving backwards. The funny thing about wind is that no matter what direction you go it seems like you are always running IN to the wind…why is that?

Today’s 20 mile run was MUCH BETTER than last weekends 18. I didn’t walk until 18.5 and then it was a short break mostly to get water. In fact today’s run was exactly what I needed. I have mentioned before that long runs are my favorite kind of run…so much time to think and they just make me SO HAPPY. This morning put a lot of things in to perspective and made me realize that I really have no friggin problems. Also explains why I took last week so hard…I look forward to these runs for the brickellmental clarity they usually give me.

Let’s recap the awesomeness I saw today on my brand new path:

Started in Brickell: SKYSCRAPPERS GALORE
Coconut Grove:
3 running groups with over 200 people each
Marina
Mini Mansionsmansion
Coral Gabels:
Immediately switched to all people over 65, highly amusing transition
Mega Mansions – Defined as those that are freakishly huge and have a yacht the size of 3 story house
University of Miami men’s cross country team – Made me think of Running with the Buffaloes
Local high school girls cross country team
Guy with no legs training on a skate board – Seriously, I have no marinaproblems.

It also made me realize our apartment finder sucked. I really thought I wanted to live in Coconut Grove, but she convinced us to stay in Brickell. It’s a nice area and all, but Coconut Grove rocks with all the parks, boats, ice cream, movie theater. Oh well, here I can see the water!

PERSPECTIVE
Today’s run was probably at a 10:10 pace and I was fairly annoyed by this since only a few weeks ago I was running 9:40 for 16 miles.
This puts me on pace for like 4:25 marathon, when my first marathon 5 years ago was at 4:15…OYE. However, putting things in perspective my run today was 40 degrees warmer AND there were 6 months in 2009 where I was barely able to run and at least 3 of those in 2008. So right now my goal is to get 100% healthy and enjoy Las Vegas. After that I am returning to the 1/2 for awhile to work on speed and then we’ll see about another full.

yikes -- best of luck battling the wind!!! and congrats on 20 miles! I doubt I'll ever run that far in my lifetime - so major major koodos to you!

congrats on the long run.

do you think the humidity makes it harder for you to really exert full effort on your run?

Running in the wind is so hard! I am sure the wind had something to do with your pace being slightly slower than you would avhe liked. Either way, you totally rocked those 20 miles! Great job!

It's an art in itself..running in wind. One I'm not sure if I'll ever master. Strong work on the 20 miler! I am glad you got time to reflect. What a great start to a weekend!

I didn't realize that Las Vegas is so close! No wonder you did your 20 miler today! Glad it went well for you. Thanks for sharing the pix of Florida, so pretty!
I guess you'll be tapering soon, how fun!

Glad you had a good 20 miler! That is awesome you didnt have to stop until 18.5 miles!! I agree - the longer runs are fun because you have so much time to enjoy the scenery and think!

Funny, I was just saying today that I do not want wind on marathon day!

I love the long run, too. It's my favorite part of the week!

I love long runs for the head clearing perspective too.

Glad to hear you made the coconut treats and used them more as a cereal topping! Awesome! See, creativity is a beautiful thing, isn't it!!

nice job on the long run! sounds like such a nice area to run. don't worry too much about the time today. like you said it's much warmer. Vegas will not be that warm and your legs will be good to go since you didn't kill them in the warm temps!

Good luck! I want to train for a marathon too chicken any ideas for a training program? I totally skipped my long run today and just walked a couple miles. I was soo sore from yoga and tired. When training it forces me to get off my butt and run more then 4 or 5 miles.

Miami is a beautiful City, but Coconut Grove is my favorite all time place. It used to be more eclectic and bohemian many, many years ago and was my all time favorite place to be. The parks are beautiful and all of the festivals they have too.

At least your not that far from it.

Today was really, really windy.

I do think humidity makes it harder for running. Something the body has to get used to.

Sounds like your enjoying the town and doing great. 20 miles is awesome.

Be careful and stay safe.

I love when I have good runs too that give me mental clarity. One reason I love running : ) I think your pace is good...you should be proud, but I totally understand how frustrating it is when one week you were improving your time and then the next it fell back, just happened to me. The key is not to get discouraged..right, easy sad the done. I sure hope I can do 20 miles this week...you have inspired me!

I love your blog, thanks! I'm going to add a Gratitude Journal to the end of my weekly blog, too. Thanks for the idea, sometimes I get so lost in self-pity and forget that there ARE things to be grateful for.

Good job on the 20! Happy running!

Great job on your 20 miler! I'm from Miami too...how have you found good running paths? I find it so hard to find good places to run here.

Sounds like a great sense of perspective going into Vegas. You're going to rock it.

By the way, you run a ton of miles! Just noticed it on the POTM database thing. Awesome :)

I'm glad you had a great 20 miler!

Great to see that you're exploring Miami. But geez, I could have told you that Coconut Grove would be more your style. Brickell has great apartments, but the Grove is pretty much unbeatable as far as Miami neighborhoods go.
